There is no backup in the ACP on 1.1 as you said.

I think there maybe one in 1.2, or maybe thats not till 1.4, cant remember.

there is a backup feature in 1.2, but no restore feature

This feature exists from MyBB 1.2 onwards. For the time being, make sure you backup frequently using PHPMyAdmin.
